I know that three is considered a low review number, but it's really average, by Amazon standards 5 = it's really perfect and I love it, 4 = I like it a lot, 3 = I have average feelings and so on down the line. I am explaining this because I have mixed feelings about the La Pavoni. I don't feel it I can give it 4 stars, but I wish I could give it 3 1/2.
I was a bit disappointed out of the box. I chose the black base, but it looks a little cheap and the drip pan is a bit of plastic that doesn't really fit snugly. The polish on the rest of the machine is very attractive. The espresso holder is solid and heavy.
The two cup holder, the one everyone online says to use, still only gives a very small amount of espresso. One could double pump for more. As my husband attempted to make cup after cup, that ended in the trash, (fondly called "sink shots" online) I thought this was more effort than it was worth. Also the base kept tilting, a problem mentioned a lot during online research. Again, for the money, they could have either weighted the base or extended the length of the base to solve the tilting problem. I will say here the extending the length is what my husband told me, it said it was physics or something.
A handle or something to hold onto besides the hot machine would have been helpful when pumping the lever as the base is tilty. And the machine does get HOT. Be careful if you have children or inattentive adults, it's very easy to touch the metal and be burned.
The pressure gauge seemed to work fine, the lever went up and down, we actually got some crema and drinkable espresso eventually, but the ratio of effort to the quality of espresso, for us, wasn't worth it.
Before buying a lever machine do a ton of research. When people who absolutely love it still call it high maintenance, hard to use, fiddly, prissy, and precious, believe them! Decide if having to clean it thoroughly, backwash it, get the temps and bars just right, descale it frequently, etc is what you really want, it may be. The challenge may be part of the fun for many people. My experience is otherwise.
When doing research online it's easy to fall in love with people pulling shots of beautiful crema filled espresso from these beauties, but it may be like painting, some people are artists, some of us draw stick figures and find out, after trying art, we are happy with our stick figures.
In summation for us the base was either to light or short but it tilted, we were disappointed in the cheap looking base and catch tray, the outside of the machine gets very hot, and it's very fiddly and fussy to use.
